Games like Word Hunt you can play free, on any phone

Word Hunt is the timed letter-grid race inside GamePigeon, and it only exists on Apple devices. GamePigeon is an iMessage app extension, so the game lives inside a text thread between two iPhones: sixteen letters on a 4x4 grid, eighty seconds, one-on-one. There is no Android version and there never has been.

Word Night is the same kind of game — a small grid, a short clock, words made from touching letters — and it is free to play in the browser, so any phone can open it. Everyone plays the same round on their own device, which means an iPhone and an Android can finally be in the same game. There are no iPhone or Android apps yet.

Word Night is an independent game and is not affiliated with GamePigeon or Apple.

First, the confusing part: two different games share the name

Search the app stores for "word hunt" and you get two completely different things.

  • The grid race — the GamePigeon one people actually mean. Sixteen random letters, eighty seconds, and you find as many words as you can by linking letters that touch. No word list, no clues, pure discovery under pressure.
  • Word searches — a printed-puzzle format where you are given a list of words and hunt for them in a big static grid. Dozens of these apps use "Word Hunt" in their name, which is why the store results feel useless when you are looking for the first kind.

If the version you remember involved swiping quickly and comparing scores with a friend at the end, you want the grid race. That is the format Boggle established, GamePigeon made addictive over iMessage, and Word Night builds in the same tradition without tying it to one brand of phone.

Why there is no Word Hunt on Android

Nothing sinister: as at July 2026, GamePigeon is built as an iMessage app extension, and Apple has never shipped iMessage for Android, so the extension has nowhere to run there. That is also why the usual workarounds are so unsatisfying — third-party bridges, browser re-creations of the grid, or unrelated word-search apps with a similar name.

The practical consequence is a social one. Group chats are mixed. Someone sends a Word Hunt invite, half the group cannot open it, and the game quietly stops being a thing that group does.

Free Word Hunt games: the alternatives, and what each one needs

If you are looking for free Word Hunt games because the real one will not open on your phone, these are the options, checked 27 July 2026 against each publisher's own store listing.

  • Word Night — free in a browser, so it opens on an iPhone, an Android or a laptop with nothing to install and no account. 4x4, 5x5 or 6x6, rounds of 30 to 120 seconds, party rounds for up to eight people on one shared clock, in English or Italian. No iPhone or Android app yet.
  • Word Blitz (LOTUM one GmbH) — free with advertising on iOS and Android, built around one-on-one duels, in sixteen languages.
  • Microsoft Wordament — free, puts everyone on the same board at the same time rather than pairing you with one opponent.
  • Boggle With Friends (Zynga) — the officially licensed one: free and ad-supported on iOS and Android, in nine languages, with offline solo play, but matches are turn-based and it requires a linked account.
  • What to avoid — any listing whose screenshots show a word list down the side. That is a word search, not this game, and the stores are full of them under this name.

How to get better at the grid race

Two things raise a score more than anything else, and neither of them is vocabulary.

  • Stop reading left to right. The grid connects in eight directions and has no reading order. The words you miss are almost always the ones that run diagonally or double back on themselves.
  • Find one word, then farm it. Once a word works, try it with S, ED, ER, ING and RE. Finding rest usually means rests, rested and resting are sitting in the same corner of the grid.

Questions people ask about Word Hunt

Is there a Word Hunt for Android?

No. As at July 2026, Word Hunt is part of GamePigeon, an iMessage app extension, and Apple has never shipped iMessage for Android, so the extension has nowhere to run there. Searching for Word Hunt Android mostly returns word-search puzzles with a similar name. The realistic move for an Android player is a game that runs in a browser, which any phone can open.

What are the best free games like Word Hunt?

For the same timed-grid feeling on any phone, Word Night is free in a browser and needs no account. Word Blitz by LOTUM covers one-on-one duels on iOS and Android. Microsoft Wordament puts everyone on the same board at the same time. Avoid anything that shows a word list in its screenshots — that is a word search, which is a different game.

How long is a round of Word Hunt?

Eighty seconds, on a 4x4 grid of sixteen letters, one-on-one inside an iMessage thread. Word Night runs 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds instead, on 4x4, 5x5 or 6x6, and a solo round can be played with no clock at all.

Can an iPhone and an Android phone play together?

Not through GamePigeon — it needs iMessage on both sides, and iMessage exists only on Apple devices. In a browser-based game they can: one person starts a round, shares the link, and it does not matter what anybody's phone is.

What is the difference between Word Hunt and a word search?

A word search hands you a list of words to find in a large static grid. Word Hunt gives you no list at all: you get a small grid of random letters and a timer, and you score by discovering words yourself by linking touching letters. Most app-store listings called Word Hunt are actually word searches, which is why searching for it is confusing. Check the screenshots: if you see a word list down the side, it is the other genre.

Is Word Hunt the same as Boggle?

Same family. Boggle set the format in 1972 — published by Parker Brothers originally, and a Hasbro brand today: shake the letters, race the timer, longer words score more. Word Hunt is a modern take on it inside iMessage, and Netflix's Boggle Party is the licensed TV version. Word Night is the browser one.
