Word Night is a free word game like Boggle that you play online in a browser, at wordnight.com. It is a grid of letters, a clock, and longer words for more points. Everyone in a party round opens the same grid on their own phone and races the same countdown — in one room or in different countries — and the round ends for everybody at the same moment.

What it needs: a browser. No television, no subscription, no account, no install. There are no iPhone or Android apps yet.

Party rounds: up to 8 players, live and synchronous, joined by an invite link or a six-character code. One shared countdown, one shared end.
Solo rounds: the same grid on your own, with an optional untimed mode.
Grids: 4x4, 5x5 or 6x6.
Round length: 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds. A solo round can also be played with no clock; a party round is always timed, because a shared round needs a shared end.
Words: three letters minimum. A three-letter word scores 1 point; every longer word scores its length minus two, with no cap.

That is the whole invitation. Whoever you send it to opens it and is in the round — no sign-up, no app, no matter which phone they own. The group chat that has not agreed on a plan in three weeks is the right place for this.

What happens when the buzzer goes

One list, not four. Every word anybody found, with the name of whoever found it sitting next to it — the three you all had, the one only your sister saw, the seven-letter word that decided the whole thing — and then the standings. That is the part people actually play for, and it is the part a turn-by-turn game cannot give you, because by the time they take their turn you have stopped caring.

How to play a word game like Boggle online: the rules in four steps

Word Night deals you a grid. Sixteen letters on the 4x4 board, with 5x5 and 6x6 available when you want more room to work with.
Trace words. Swipe or tap through letters that touch each other — sideways, up and down, or diagonally. The same tile cannot be used twice in one word, and words are three letters or longer.
Watch the clock. Rounds run 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds. A solo round can be played with no clock at all; a party round is always timed, so everyone finishes together.
Read the reveal. In a party round, one shared list shows every word that was found and who found it, then the standings. Seeing the word your friend spotted and you did not is the whole game.

Grid sizes and round lengths: 4x4, 5x5 and 6x6

The classic Boggle board is 4x4 — sixteen letters — and you can move up to 5x5 or 6x6 when sixteen stops being enough room. A bigger grid does not just add letters: it adds paths, so the long words get longer and the clock starts to matter more than your vocabulary.

Rounds run 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds. Thirty seconds is a bus stop; two minutes is a proper hunt. A solo round can also be played untimed, which is the mode to use if you want to see how far a single grid actually goes. Party rounds are always timed, because eight people on the same board need the same buzzer.

Both dictionaries are real: English and Italian each have their own word list, not a translated interface over an English one.

Partly, and it is worth being exact. A solo round that is already open keeps working if your connection drops, and the result is saved when you are back online. What you cannot do is open wordnight.com with no connection at all, because there is no offline cache yet. Party rounds need a connection throughout, because everybody is on the same clock.

What words count, and how are they scored?

Letters have to touch — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — and you cannot reuse the same tile inside one word. Words are three letters or longer. A three-letter word scores 1 point, and every longer word scores its length minus two, with no cap: four letters is 2 points, seven letters is 5, twelve letters is 10.
